Leeds United defender Pontus Jansson has admitted that he has struggled to cope with the amount of games in the Championship, reports the Yorkshire Evening Post.
What’s the word?
Jansson’s future has been a talking point throughout the season due to his impressive performances at the back.
The 26-year-old joined the Whites from Torino on a season-long loan in the summer before agreeing a permanent three-year contract, which will be activated at the end of the season.
Despite this, rumours have been rumbling, with Swedish publication Expressen recently reporting that Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Liverpool are all interested in the player.
While there has been no direct indication from Jansson that he wants to leave in the summer, his latest comments will be a concern for both Leeds and the clubs tracking him.
The Yorkshire Evening Post quotes the defender as saying.
“It’s been a long season. I can’t talk for the other guys but for me, playing 35 games is tough.”
What could this mean for his future?
When Jansson made these remarks, he was asked in a press conference to explain how Leeds have managed to claim just four points from six games after flying high in the playoff positions.
The fact that he has admitted to struggling with the packed figure schedule raises a few red flags, particularly if Leeds fail to earn promotion to the Premier League.
Teams in the Championship have 46 games in their calendar, and that does not include any of the cup competitions.
It is vital, particularly for teams vying for promotion, that they have players who can cope with the demands of the second tier.
Jansson’s struggles will also be concerning for his rumoured Premier League suitors, who play eight fewer games that Championship clubs, but the pressure is stronger given that the quality of opposition is tougher.
