Tottenham Hotspur play host to Arsenal in the latest episode of the North London derby at Wembley on Saturday, but Spurs fans aren’t expecting key defender Toby Alderweireld to start despite his return to action against Newport County in midweek and the fact that he has declared himself available for selection.
Mauricio Pochettino had been without the Belgium international since he tore his hamstring in the 3-1 win against Real Madrid in the Champions League on November 1, but the 28-year-old finally made his long-awaited comeback in the FA Cup fourth round replay tie against the League Two side on Wednesday.
However, he certainly isn’t guaranteed to come into the XI for the clash against the Gunners, considering he is unlikely to be risked for three fixtures inside a week having only just returned from injury, with a Champions League trip to Juventus to come on Tuesday night.
Tottenham supporters were quick to have their say on the Belgian centre-back’s possible involvement via social media, and while one said “I think he might be saved for Juve”, another said “think he’ll keep Toby for Juve”.
Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…
